The Most Talked About Pens for 2012

We thought it might be useful to compile some top ten lists for products we found the most helpful, interesting, surprising, or whatever term is most appropriate when thinking about Pens. With that in mind, below is a breakdown of the most frequently visited pen posts from 2010 as ranked by the number of unique visitors to that post. As long as it was posted between Jan. 1, 2010 and the end of 2010, it was eligible.

The countdown of the most frequently visited posts about Pens written in 2010:

10. Pilot Precise V5 RT - This is a classic pen that has been around for a while with a few redesigns. America's number one selling Rolling Ball Pen, now in an innovative retractable design has patented precise needle point technology, super smooth liquid ink formula that's Airplane safe, is both retractable and refillable and is available in black, blue & red inks, and Extra Fine and Fine point sizes. When someone asks us about a “good pen” this one almost always comes up on our Getmecheaper reviews, so we were glad to see it make its way into the top 10.

9. Noodlers Ink Aerometric Fountain Pen - It would be hard for one of the most popular fountain pen ink manufacturers to release a fountain pen and not have lots of interest about it.

8. Inside Your Sharpie Pen - The wildly popular Sharpie Pens spawned many questions, one of them being “Why does my retractable Sharpie Pen run out of ink so quick?” We couldn’t let that question go unanswered, so we grabbed our power tools and hacked apart a few different versions of the pens to get to the root of the problem - only to find out that the ink cartridge of the sharpie pen is nearly half the size of regular ones. However, Sharpie has nailed it with the Stainless Steel Sharpie, and to this day we still hear and read people proclaiming their love for the new design, not to mention people who are still seeing it for the first time. Lets hope they’ve increased the size of the ink cartridge!

7. The Best Gel Ink Pens - 1. Uniball 207, 2. Pilot G2, 3. Pilo FriXion, 4. Vivo Triple, 5. Zebra Jimnie. This was a “point in time” look at the best-selling gel ink pens on Amazon.com which yielded us surprising results. Even better than the list though, were all of the great comments from readers sharing their favorite pens with us.

6. High Grade Uniball Kuru Toga - The upgrade to a skinner metal body for the Uniball Kuru Toga mechanical pencil turned out to be a big win for the folks at Uniball. This should be your go-to pencil in any situation, so always carry two with you in a .5mm and .3mm!

5. IdeaPaint - While not necessarily a pen, it can be used for pens and is one of the most unique ideas for office supplies out there. It is basically a white board in a can…put it where you please. One of the more cool and unique products that we reviewed this year, IdeaPaint allows you to convert any paintable surface into a whiteboard.

4. Zebra Sharbo X - This is just one of those pens that we love to look at and hold because of its great design, and the quality materials that go into it.

3. Pilot G2 - we’ve always wondered why the Pilot G2 was such a popular pen. Its pros? Extremely comfortable to use, dried instantly, retractable tip, nice design. Cons? The whole “Gel Ink” misnomer. The Bottom line? This is one of the best pens we have come across in a long time. They're inexpensive, last a long time, are smudge free and give a solid, clean line. This gel ink pen is not cheap, about $10 for one, but his words are wonderful, and this is the high-end pen for any office, usually used by managers and members of top management level.

2. Sharpie Liquid Pencil - Sharpie's Liquid Pencil is sort of a hybrid between pen and pencil. That said, it can be kind of hard to wrap one's head around Sharpie's new conception, at least until you pick one up. Although it looks like and writes like a pen, it utilizes liquid graphite and erases much like a pencil. It writes smoothly, doesn't break or need new lead and it is even less smudge-producing than a standard pencil and far less smear-prone than any pen. Its erasability varies based on a bunch of factors from the type of paper to how hard you press. In general though, it erases quite well soon after writing, which tends to be the only time we would want to erase anything anyway. It's supposed to get more permanent after the first 24 hours, but will remain somewhat erasable long after that. We love it, and so does everyone else!

1. Waterford Killbarry Guilloche Rollerball Pen: - this isn't technically the standard office pen, but must be included for several reasons: one is solid brass and accented with faceted platinum. It 'nice to have this piece of art as an anniversary present 10 years of work by associates or the manager. If used, you will be able to feel a Killbarry Waterford exquisite texture and a sense of luxury. The ink is dark enough, but really clear and exact on paper. It does look a bit like 'a vintage fountain pen, without a pillow or grip. This is a pen used to sign the documents and not to pen each day.
